Give Yourself

Give Yourself
Please give details of a time when you had to motivate you to achieve a personal goal. What are you doing?

If Please give details of a time when you had to motivate you to achieve a personal goal. What did you work to achieve, how did you motivate yourself, and what was the outcome?

Answering "Noggin the Nog" said almost all. I would add only one or two things. Exercise! Get the blood flowing, muscles in motion, and a little air and flowing landscapes different from you. It is refreshing and traces the pursuit of this goal so much easier. And if some form of exercise is the goal - to Olympics, for example - is then a kind of exercise that is very different from the goal-oriented one (ATV, eg. when your goal is mostly swimming.) Keep your sense of humor! This means above all, keep your goal and achieving it in the proper perspective in your life. Regardless of how a goal is important, there are other issues you * must * be supported. Prioritize, and your aim in the right place on the priority list ( "Breathe. Eat. keep warm. Find safe shelter to pay. feed the children. Develop a cure for cancer. Play with children. play with the dog. ...") To do this, and then when things go wrong, you automatically have a way of looking at problems that allows you to laugh - and you can then take good anyway, and get out without assistance (if any). It also helps to have a clear idea of what each and every step is that you must join the along all the way to achieve your goal. The list of Break 'em in baby steps at a time, like when progress seems slow, or whenever you must wait outside influences to make things easier. Write down, even: it helps you stay focused, nerve and helps keep progress less stressful. Have - you have a personal goal for the moment, or are you considering putting just one? Good luck anyway!

Give Yourself to the Rain: Poems for the Very Young Give Yourself to the Rain: Poems for the Very Young

Margaret Wise Brown once observed, "To write well for children, one must love the things that children love." And write well for children she did -- with a deep love for and a keen perception of all things great and small in the world around us. Collected here for the first time are twenty-four of Margaret Wise Brown's children's poems, which range in subject from jig-dancing pigs and the wild sound of the wind to the colors of a summer day and the joy of giving oneself to the rain. With a foreword by noted children's literature scholar and Brown biographer Leonard S. Marcus, and illustrated with vibrant and sensitive paintings by Teri L. Weidner, Give Yourself to the Rain is a precious gift to be shared among children and adults everywhere.

The author of Goodnight Moon wrote scores of poems for children in her short lifetime, many of which were left unpublished until now. In this collection of 24 poems, Margaret Wise Brown's virtuosity shines through with verses about simple childhood pleasures and sorrows. Days later, readers young and old will find themselves muttering: "Hark to the sound / Of the sea-slung gong / Ding Dong Dong / Ding Dong Dong" or "Jig Big / jig little / jig little / Jig Big / Jig like a big PIG / dancing a jig." Some poems are clearly more refined than others; if Brown were alive, she undoubtedly would have smoothed the rougher edges in "Pussycat and the Pumpkin," for example. Teri L. Weidner's watercolor and colored-pencil illustrations in "Spring Madness" and "Colors" are sweet and natural, although "The Monkey Man" and "Christmas Song" are less appealing. When all is said and done, though, fans of the legendary Margaret Wise Brown will be pleased at another glimpse into her talented, imaginative world. (Ages 4 and older) --Emilie Coulter

What happened to women wearing red lipstick?

Personally, I find it irritating that you can not get a red lip base. I can find pink, purple, coral, tone (which I find strange. I want to focus my lips, and not hide them), golden brown, even glitter clear, but I can not find a single RED. Whatever happened to lipstick?

You want a red with a blue background is red makes your teeth look whiter. If you try on a red and your teeth look yellow, it has an orange base and should be avoided at any price. Red orange is hideous. Get a real look at these stores are the counters: NARS red captures: Scarlett Empress and Red Lizard Fire Down Below. PROFIT's best red is the first class. CHANEL: Shanghai Red, Ingenue and Red Dream. You also want to line your entire lip in the lipstick redder Liner you can find. Lip line and fill it with lip liner FIRST. Chanel and Laura Mercier make pencils, I use two. Lipstick goes on the lip liner. It does not move and it'll be fabulous.

Whatever Happened to Good and Evil? Whatever Happened to Good and Evil?
List Price: $29.95
Sale Price: $19.98

Since September 11, 2001, many people in the United States have been more inclined to use the language of good and evil, and to be more comfortable with the idea that certain moral standards are objective (true independently of what anyone happens to think of them). Some people, especially those who are not religious, are not sure how to substantiate this view. Whatever Happened to Good and Evil? provides a basis for exploring these doubts and ultimately defends the objectivity of ethics. Engaging and accessible, it is the first introduction to meta-ethics written especially for students and general readers with no philosophical background. Focusing on the issues at the foundation of morality, it poses such questions as: How can we know what is right and wrong? Does ethical objectivity require God? Why should I be moral? Where do moral standards come from? What is a moral value, and how can it exist in a scientific world? Do cultural diversity and persistent moral disagreement support moral skepticism? Writing in a clear and lively style and employing many examples to illustrate theoretical arguments, Russ Shafer-Landau identifies the many weaknesses in contemporary moral skepticism and devotes considerable attention to presenting, and critiquing, the most difficult objections to his view. Also included in the book are a helpful summary of all the major arguments covered, as well as a glossary of key philosophical terms. Whatever Happened to Good and Evil? is ideal for a variety of philosophy courses and compelling reading for anyone interested in ethics.

An unforgettable hardcover collection of WATCHMEN writer Alan Moore's definitive Superman tales that is sure to appeal of readers of his BATMAN: THE KILLING JOKE graphic novel. Moore teams with Curt Swan, the definitive Superman artist from the 1950's through the 1970's, to tell the final adventure of the Man of Steel featuring his last stand against Lex Luthor, Brainiac and his other foes in "WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE MAN OF TOMORROW?". This volume also includes Moore's classic early collaboration with WATCHMEN illustrator Dave Gibbons, "FOR THE MAN WHO HAS EVERYTHING", in which Batman, Robin and Wonder Woman find Superman held captive by the villain Mongul in the Fortress of Solitude and dreaming of an idyllic life on Krypton courtesy of a wish-fulfilling parasitic plant known as the Black Mercy. Both tales are considered two of the top five all-time best Superman stories among fans. The rare first team-up adventure between the Man of Tomorrow and Swamp Thing, the character that first brought Moore to notoriety in the United States, is included as an additional bonus.

After all the hype about the "death" of Superman, here's a much more fitting end to the Superman legend. Described as an "imaginary story," it begins 10 years after Superman has died and recounts the events that led up to his final stand. Alan Moore is a master of this kind of superhero story, and this edition is a great opportunity for those who may have missed it the first time around.

Whatever Happened to the World of Tomorrow? Whatever Happened to the World of Tomorrow?
List Price: $24.95
Sale Price: $14.33

Whatever Happened to the World of Tomorrow?, the long-awaited follow-up to Mom's Cancer, is a unique graphic novel that tells the story of a young boy and his relationship with his father. Spanning the period from the 1939 New York World's Fair to the last Apollo space mission in 1975, it is told through the eyes of a boy as he grows up in an era that was optimistic and ambitious, fueled by industry, engines, electricity, rockets, and the atom bomb. An insightful look at relationships and the promise of the future, award-winning author Brian Fies presents his story in a way that only comics and graphic novels can.  Interspersed with the comic book adventures of Commander Cap Crater (created by Fies to mirror the styles of the comics and the time periods he is depicting), and mixing art and historical photographs, this groundbreaking graphic novel is a lively trip through a half century of technological evolution. It is also a perceptive look at the changing moods of our nation-and the enduring promise of the future. "A hopelessly optimistic moon-age daydream"—The Village Voice"Whatever Happened To The World Of Tomorrow is a very special book that will speak to you on so many levels. And at the end of it, when you sit there and think on what you’ve just read, it may even make you, like it did me, realise that Fies’ vision of our past and his hope for the future is something we can all share in. Quite brilliant."—Richard Bruton, forbiddenplanet.co.uk

Whatever Happened to Daddy's Little Girl?: The Impact of Fatherlessness on Black Women Whatever Happened to Daddy's Little Girl?: The Impact of Fatherlessness on Black Women
List Price: $14.95
Sale Price: $8.59

What happens to a little girl who grows up without a father? Can she ever feel truly loved and fully alive? Does she ever heal--or is she doomed to live a wounded, fragmented life and to pass her wounds down to her own children? Fatherlessness afflicts nearly half the households in America, and it has reached epidemic proportions in the African-American community, with especially devastating consequences for black women. In this powerful book, accomplished journalist Jonetta Rose Barras breaks the code of silence and gives voice to the experiences of America's fatherless women--starting with herself.Passionate and shockingly frank, Whatever Happened to Daddy's Little Girl? is the first book to explore the plight of America's fatherless daughters from the unique perspective of the African-American community. This brilliant volume gives all fatherless daughters the knowledge that they are not alone and the courage to overcome the hidden pain they have suffered for so long.

Passionate and provocative, Whatever Happened to Daddy's Little Girl? explores the impact of fatherlessness on black women from a thoughtful and highly personal perspective. A woman who has herself "lost" three fathers, Jonetta Rose Barras interweaves her own experience of the "fatherless woman syndrome" with those of other fatherless black women, observations by psychologists and sociologists, and research findings. Barras concludes that factors such as the shift to a service economy, the "gender war of the 1970s through the 1990s," and affirmative action and quota policies caused black men to be "kicked to the curbside." Consequently, many black men began to perceive themselves as superfluous to their families, and by 1996, 60 percent of all black children were living in fatherless homes. While some attention has been given to the impact of fatherlessness upon sons, Barras notes that very little has been paid to the effect on daughters. She powerfully shows the seriousness of this oversight, arguing that fatherless daughters often believe themselves unworthy and unlovable; strongly fear abandonment, rejection, and commitment; possess strong aversions to intimacy or, conversely, act promiscuously; overcompensate in work and relationships or oversaturate with food, alcohol, sex, or drugs; and experience extreme anger, rage, and/or depression. Barras offers suggestions to begin the healing process (on several fronts, for she is concerned too with the related issues of daughterless fathers and broken maternal trust). Perhaps one of the most important means of healing (both individually and societally) is the conversation Barras opens with this significant work. --Stephanie Wickersham

And why? I had to say goodbye to my mother 3 years ago in February, because she had died.

My mom, she died because of his liquor, and not a day goes by I do not think about it.

Suicide would appear to be the last taboo. Even incest is now discussed freely in popular media, but the suicide of a loved one is still an act most people are unable to talk about--or even admit to their closest family or friends. This is just one of the many painful and paralyzing truths author Carla Fine discovered when her husband, a successful young physician, took his own life in December 1989. And being unable to speak openly and honestly about the cause of her pain made it all the more difficult for her to survive. With No Time to Say Goodbye, she brings suicide survival from the darkness into light, speaking frankly about the overwhelming feelings of confusion, guilt, shame, anger, and loneliness that are shared by all survivors. Fine draws on her own experience and on conversations with many other survivors--as well as on the knowledge of counselors and mental health professionals. She offers a strong helping hand and invaluable guidance to the vast numbers of family and friends who are left behind by the more than thirty thousand people who commit suicide each year, struggling to make sense of an act that seems to them senseless, and to pick up the pieces of their own shattered lives. And, perhaps most important, for the first time in any book, she allows survivors to see that they are not alone in their feelings of grief and despair.

Come into my parlor . . . For FBI Special Agent Kimberly Quincy it starts with a pregnant hooker. The story Delilah Rose tells Kimberly is too horrifying to be true. But prostitutes are disappearing, leaving behind no bodies and no explanations—except one only Kimberly, herself four months pregnant, is willing to believe. Could a sadist be hunting the streets for vulnerable young girls and using spiders to do his dirty work? Said the spider to the fly. . . . Either a serial killer has found the key to the perfect murder or Kimberly is following clues to a crime that never happened. In fact, Kimberly’s caught in a web more lethal than any spider’s, and the more she fights for answers, the more tightly she’s trapped. She’s already close—too close—to a psychopath who makes women’s nightmares come alive. And like her mother and sister before her, both victims of a serial killer, it won’t be long before it’s Kimberly’s time to say goodbye with her dying breath. . . .

When doctors told Art Buchwald that his kidneys were kaput, the renowned humorist declined dialysis and checked into a Washington, D.C., hospice to live out his final days. Months later, “The Man Who Wouldn’t Die” was still there, feeling good, holding court in a nonstop “salon” for his family and dozens of famous friends, and confronting things you usually don’t talk about before you die; he even jokes about them. Here Buchwald shares not only his remarkable experience–as dozens of old pals from Ethel Kennedy to John Glenn to the Queen of Swaziland join the party–but also his whole wonderful life: his first love, an early brush with death in a foxhole on Eniwetok Atoll, his fourteen champagne years in Paris, fame as a columnist syndicated in hundreds of newspapers, and his incarnation as hospice superstar. Buchwald also shares his sorrows: coping with an absent mother, childhood in a foster home, and separation from his wife, Ann. He plans his funeral (with a priest, a rabbi, and Billy Graham, to cover all the bases) and strategizes how to land a big obituary in The New York Times (“Make sure no head of state or Nobel Prize winner dies on the same day”). He describes how he and a few of his famous friends finagled cut-rate burial plots on Martha’s Vineyard and how he acquired a Picasso drawing without really trying. What we have here is a national treasure, the complete Buchwald, uncertain of where the next days or weeks may take him but unfazed by the inevitable, living life to the fullest, with frankness, dignity, and humor. “[Art Buchwald] has given his friends, their families, and his audiences so many laughs and so much joy through the years that that alone would be an enduring legacy. But Art has never been just about the quick laugh. His humor is a road map to essential truths and insights that might otherwise have eluded us.”–Tom Brokaw

First Kiss

First Kiss
How to kiss your girlfriend for the first time?

So um I am planning on kissing my girlfriend for the first time tomorrow or sometime soon. This would be my first kiss too. So, any tips or advice? I know about closing your eyes, tilting your head, and having good breath, but is there anything else I should know? Thanks!

Hold her close to you and lean in slowly, dont make it a quick peck but part your lips and move your lips with hers when you kiss. if you want you can kiss her cheek or neck too. It feels so good when my bf kisses my neck, it drives me crazy. you can part her lips some using yours and you can add some tongue to the kiss. dont lick, but just jently move your tongue in her mouth. dont shove it into her mouth, but gently move it. Kissing will come natural to you. She may be nervous because its her first kiss, but it will make it way better for her if you are confident and know what your doing. good luck, have fun!

Rumor has it that Francine is finally going to find a way to kiss Arthur at her birthday party. Arthur is worried, until he is assured that they will not play that spin-the-bottle kissing game. Instead, Francine and Muffy have a devilishly clever plan, and only D.W. and Pal can save Arthur.

After hearing rumors that Francine is planning to kiss Arthur at her party, Arthur's sister, D.W., saves the day in an unexpected way. Devious Francine tricks Arthur with a kissing game, and Muffy leads him out to the garage to await his fate. D.W., walking by with their dog, Pal, catches on to the plot, and sends Pal through the cat door to warn Arthur with a few sloppy kisses of his own. "Run for your life!" yells D.W., and Arthur does, but not without a pause to snag a big piece of cake for his new bodyguard! Children are enraptured with Marc Brown's stories of the unique aardvark hero on PBS, as well as in many early reader picture books. And with the entertaining "Step into Reading" sticker book series, there's a bonus--two full pages of peel-off stickers enable kids to practice their reading and writing skills. Certain words in the story are printed in blue ink--young readers are encouraged to find the corresponding sticker picture and place it over the blue word. The second page of stickers illustrates places and themes and allows budding writers to try their hand at creative writing as they make up stories based on the sticker images--in this case, aquarium scenes. Don't miss Arthur's Reading Race or any of Arthur's other "Step into Reading" adventures. (Ages 3 to 6) --Emilie Coulter

Growing up male - funny, touching, and as unexpected as life itself! This collection of finely crafted stories from the acclaimed author of Forgotten Fire zeros in on the moments of comic confusion and tender transformation that make up one boy's wild ride through childhood and adolescence. Whether it's struggling up a godforsaken mountain with other miserable campers, tossing aside all scruples to scramble to the top of the school social heap, searching for the true path to romantic love, or trying to meet the expectations of a father whose high standards seem impossible to live up to - these funny and affecting tales of triumph, humiliation, love, loss, competitive kissing, and laxatives will touch readers and have them laughing out loud as Will, a boy with an overactive imagination, grapples with "what it takes to be a man" and "what kind of man will I become?"First Serial Seventeen Magazine

Fledgling author Adam Bagdasarian surprisingly follows up his grim, highly lauded first novel Forgotten Fire with a series of humorous, autobiographical sketches about his childhood and adolescence from ages 5 to 20. Bagdasarian is at his funniest when commenting on the trials and torments of puberty, especially when it comes to the opposite sex. In the title story, sixth-grader "Will" (the thinly disguised author) discovers that French kissing doesn't just happen: "I tried to find a way to kiss her and breathe at the same time, but no matter where I turned my head, her nose was always there." And in "Going Steady" Will realizes that dating a seventh-grade girl is going to require diplomacy when she "handed me a small white stuffed unicorn with silver glitter on its horn ... as though it were a baseball signed by Willie Mays, and I took it as though it were a poison apple." Beyond dating drama, Bagdasarian's teen self also explores the idea of old age and death. In "A Short Life," he melodramatically fantasizes a lump on his head is a tumor and he will probably die before seeing Europe, and in the more serious "My Tutor," he is moved to tears by an aged geometry teacher who can no longer remember, let alone teach, familiar proofs. By turns witty, ridiculous, and poignant (the stories about Bagdasarian's much beloved father are among the more touching pieces) First French Kiss is a short, sweet collection that teenagers of all ages will read with pleasure and recognition. (Ages 13 and older) --Jennifer Hubert

Well, Rafe already has a girlfriend, plus now he thinks I have a boyfriend. So I have two imaginary boyfriends, and still no date for the dance. What was I even thinking? Would a guy like Rafe ever date a nobody like me?

The World According to Garp (Modern Library) The World According to Garp (Modern Library)
List Price: $24.00
Sale Price: $14.68

The World According to Garp is a comic and compassionate coming-of-age novel that established John Irving as one of the most imaginative writers of his generation. A worldwide bestseller since its publication in 1978, Irving's classic is filled with stories inside stories about the life and times of T. S. Garp, novelist and bastard son of Jenny Fields--a feminist leader ahead of her time. Beyond that, The World According to Garp virtually defies synopsis.----"Nothing in contemporary fiction matches it," said critic Terrence Des Pres. "Irving's blend of gravity and play is unique, audacious, almost blasphemous. . . . Friendship, marriage and family are his primary themes, but at that blundering level of life where mishap and folly--something close to joyful malice--perpetually intrude and disrupt, often fatally. Life, in Irving's fiction, is always under siege." Time magazine commented: "Irving's popularity is not hard to understand. His world is really the world according to nearly everyone."----This Modern Library edition includes a new Introduction by the author. The Modern Library has played a significant role in American cultural life for the better part of a century. The series was founded in 1917 by the publishers Boni and Liveright and eight years later acquired by Bennett Cerf and Donald Klopfer. It provided the foundation for their next publishing venture, Random House. The Modern Library has been a staple of the American book trade, providing readers with affordable hardbound editons of impor-tant works of literature and thought. For the Modern Library's seventy-fifth anniversary, Random House redesigned the series, restoringas its emblem the running torchbearer created by Lucian Bernhard in 1925 and refurbishing jackets, bindings, and type, as well as inaugurating a new program of selecting titles. The Modern Library continues to provide the world's best books, at the best prices.

"Garp was a natural storyteller," says the narrator of John Irving's incandescent novel, referring to the book's hero, the novelist Garp, who has much in common with Irving himself. "He could make things up one right after the other, and they seemed to fit." Irving packs wild characters and weird events into his classic--officially recognized as such in a Modern Library edition with a new introduction by the author--while amazingly maintaining the rough feel of realism in every scene and the pulse of life in every heart. Many novelists of his time might have populated a novel with a novelist protagonist whose life and books comment on each other and the novel we're reading. Transsexual football players, ball turret gunners lobotomized in battle, multiple adultery, unicycling bears, mad feminists who amputate their tongues in sympathy with the celebrated victim of a horrifying rape--Irving made them all people. Even the bear is a fitting character. In a crucial episode, Garp's wife's seduction of a young man coincidentally occurs at the moment when Garp is delighting their young sons with a reckless car trick (one of the few scenes beautifully, eerily, heartbreakingly captured in the film version as well). Many authors would have been content with the harsh comedy of the scene, but Irving respects its integrity, and he builds the rest of the book on the consequences of the event. How does he get away with his killer cocktail of slapstick and horror? Because it's simply what we all face daily, rearranged into soul-satisfying art. "Life is an X-rated soap opera," according to Garp, and who can contradict him? Rereading Garp 20 years later, one is struck by how elegantly Irving structures his bizarre and complex story. Take the two most celebrated bits in the book, the Under Toad and Garp's story "The Pension Grillparzer," which shimmers like an exquisite Kafkaesque insect in the amber of the novel. When Garp warns his son about the "undertow" at the beach, the boy imagines a monster out of Beowulf who lurks beneath the waves to suck you under: the "Under Toad." It's funny at first, but we soon find that the Under Toad is a metaphor with teeth--he connects with a prophetic dream of death in "The Pension Grillparzer," set in Vienna. Garp's son's last words are, "It's like a dream!" And as Irving--who studied at the University of Vienna--can certainly tell you, the German word for "death" sounds precisely like the English word "toad." All that death, and yet Garp is mainly exuberant. This story is, as Garp's stuttering writing teacher puts it, "rich with lu-lu-lunacy and sorrow." It enriches literature, and our lives. --Tim Appelo

Sends chills down the spine. . . . After reading this, we can no longer afford to turn a blind eye. --Le Point The result of a remarkable three-year-long investigation that took award-winning journalist and documentary filmmaker Marie-Monique Robin across four continents (North and South America, Europe, and Asia), The World According to Monsanto tells the little-known yet shocking story of this agribusiness giant--the world's leading producer of GMOs (genetically modified organisms)--and how its new "green" face is no less malign than its PCB- and Agent Orange-soaked past. Robin reports that, following its long history of manufacturing hazardous chemicals and lethal herbicides, Monsanto is now marketing itself as a "life sciences" company, seemingly convinced about the virtues of sustainable development. However, Monsanto now controls the majority of the yield of the world's genetically modified corn and soy--ingredients found in more than 95 percent of American households--and its alarming legal and political tactics to maintain this monopoly are the subject of worldwide concern. Released to great acclaim and controversy in France, throughout Europe, and in Latin America alongside the documentary film of the same name, The World According to Monsanto is sure to change the way we think about food safety and the corporate control of our food supply.

Whether meeting the demands of broadcast journalism or balancing the needs of her family, Maria Shriver has conducted her life with wit and impeccable style. Now, she shares with readers her personal Top Ten list of things she wished someone had told her before she embarked on her career and life. This book is expanded from her highly praised Holy Cross College commencement address where she talked about the importance of following one's passion...the strength that comes from failure...and the compromises that are inevitable in marriage and parenthood. Shriver's frank honesty, self-deprecating sense of humor, and wry reminiscences will inspire men and women of all ages. Gutsy, fresh, and memorable, "Ten Things" is sure to help guide all readers in their own quest for fulfillment.

Maria Shriver's warmth, humor, and wisdom are evident on every page of this little book. Inspired by her commencement speech at the College of the Holy Cross, the book contains stories and insights that will be helpful, entertaining, and encouraging to graduates at every stage of life. The lessons themselves--"be willing to fail," "stand your ethical ground," "marriage is a hell of a lot of hard work"--are nothing new. What makes them interesting are the life stories that accompany them and Shriver's personable, friendly style. Reading this book feels like having a cup of coffee with a wise and funny friend. Tales of her first television experiences are surprising and hilarious, and she takes balancing motherhood and career to new levels--imagine postponing an interview with Fidel Castro to get your daughter to her first day of kindergarten! Each chapter is easy to read and ends with a focused lesson--kind of a bullet point from her original speech--that encourages readers to be ultimately true to themselves and their dreams, while cutting through harmful illusions. The last chapter, on laughter, is one to read again and again. Shriver maintains that without laughter not much else matters, and in life's toughest times it's laughter that gets us through. For anyone starting a new adventure--graduation, marriage, parenthood, career shift, or a milestone birthday--Ten Things I Wish I'd Known brings wisdom, laughter, practical suggestions, and a down-to-earth manner together into one fabulous gift. --Jill Lightner

When the Lights Went Out: A History of Blackouts in America When the Lights Went Out: A History of Blackouts in America
List Price: $27.95
Sale Price: $15.24

Winning entry, General Trade Cover/Jacket Category, in the 2010 New England Book Show sponsored by Bookbuilders of Boston. Where were you when the lights went out? At home during a thunderstorm? Preparing for an air attack during World War II? During the Great Northeastern Blackout of 1965? In New York City during a similar but more frightening blackout in 1977? In California when rolling blackouts hit in 2000? In 2003, when a cascading power failure left fifty million people without electricity? We often remember vividly our time in the dark. In When the Lights Went Out, David Nye views power outages in America from 1935 to the present not simply as technical failures but variously as military tactic, social disruption, crisis in the networked city, outcome of political and economic decisions, sudden encounter with sublimity, and memories enshrined in photographs. Our electrically lit-up life is so natural to us that when the lights go off, the darkness seems abnormal. Nye looks at America's development of its electrical grid, which made large-scale power failures possible; military blackouts before and during World War II ("The silence was the big surprise of the blackout, the darkness discounted," wrote Harold Ross in The New Yorker in 1942); New York City's contrasting 1965 and 1977 blackout experiences (the first characterized by cooperation, the second by looting and disorder); the growth in consumer demand that led to rolling blackouts made worse by energy traders' market manipulations; blackouts caused by terrorist attacks and sabotage; and, finally, the "greenout" (exemplified by the new tradition of "Earth Hour"), a voluntary reduction organized by environmental organizations. Blackouts, writes Nye, are breaks in the flow of social time that reveal much about the trajectory of American history. Each time one occurs, Americans confront their essential condition—not as isolated individuals, but as a community that increasingly binds itself together with electrical wires and signals.

When the Lights Went Out: Britain in the Seventies When the Lights Went Out: Britain in the Seventies
Sale Price: $13.52

The seventies are probably the most important and fascinating period in modern British political history. They encompass strikes that brought down governments, shock general election results, the rise of Margaret Thatcher and the fall of Edward Heath, the IMF crisis, the Winter of Discontent and the three-day week. But the seventies have also been frequently misunderstood, oversimplified and misrepresented. "When the Lights Went Out" goes in search of what really happened, what it felt like at the time, and where it was all leading. It includes vivid interviews with many of the leading participants, many of them now dead, from Heath to Jack Jones to Arthur Scargill, and it travels from the once-famous factories where the great industrial confrontations took place to the suburbs where Thatcherism was created and to remote North Sea oil rigs. The book also unearths the stories of the forgotten political actors away from Westminster who gave the decade so much of its volatility and excitement, from the Gay Liberation Front to the hippie anarchists of the free festival movement. Over five years in the making, this book is not an academic history but something for the general reader, written with the vividness of a novel or the best works of American New Journalism, bringing the decade back to life in all its drama and complexity.

Mouse Went Out to Get a Snack Mouse Went Out to Get a Snack
List Price: $16.00
Sale Price: $6.99

A mouse counting on a snackA peckish mouse on the hunt for a light snack - something like a piece of cheese - climbs up the table and finds a feast fit for a king. He prepares an enormous platter filled with everything from chicken legs to tacos to cupcakes - and of course there's cheese, too. However, the cat is onto him, and a chase ensues as the mouse desperately shoulders his smorgasbord back to his hole - but it's too small! All the food flies up, up, up, landing on the unfortunate feline. All except the cheese, that is, which bounces safely into the mousehole. In addition to being a happy adventure with the simplest of texts and hilarious pictures, there is the bonus of counting the items of food the mouse piles on - and later loses - from the single cheese portion up to the ten slices of chocolate cake.

"The publication of H.D.'s late roman a clef is a timely one, as it engages many important critical questions: the place of the occult in modernism, women writers' response to war, the historical and biographical contexts of H.D.'s late writing. The editors give a forceful presentation of the novel's significance."--Eileen Gregory, University of Dallas "H.D.'s The Sword Went Out to Sea was written in response to two world wars and years of unremitting bombing. A haunting novel of spiritual duress and survival, it remains eerily relevant today."--Donna Hollenberg, University of Connecticut The modernist poet and novelist H.D. (Hilda Doolittle) was profoundly interested in the occult and during WWII conducted spiritualist seances in her home. Those experiences form much of the basis for her novel The Sword Went Out to Sea, which features an experimental structure and a blending of autobiography, dream, and vision. Even though it was far too complex and eccentric for the popular presses of her day, H.D. believed The Sword Went Out to Sea was "the crown" of her years of serious study of esoteric doctrine as well as of her daily writing practice. It has never before been published.

When the Lights Went Out: How One Brawl Ended Hockey's Cold War and Changed the Game When the Lights Went Out: How One Brawl Ended Hockey's Cold War and Changed the Game

When the Lights Went Out tells the story of a moment in the 1987 World Junior Championship that forever changed the lives of the players involved, and ignited a debate that has yet to subside about the way the game is meant to be played. When Team Canada skated onto the ice that night in Piestany, Czechoslovakia, they thought they were 60 minutes away from a gold medal. Future superstars like Brendan Shanahan and Theo Fleury, pitted against Russians like Alexei Fedorov and Alex Mogilny, dreamed of returning to Canada in glory. Instead, they were sent home empty-handed, bearers of a legacy that would follow them throughout their careers. No one who saw it will ever forget it. The mere mention of Piestany evokes the image of twenty fights breaking out all over the ice as players rushed to their mates’ defence, of haymakers, stick-swinging, and even kicking, of a referee skating off the ice in shame.ESPN hockey writer Gare Joyce tells the story of the game that marked the last time Canadian and Soviet players squared off as enemies, rather than potential team mates in the NHL. It tells the stories of the combatants on the ice. Of the coaches behind the bench. Of officials, international hockey executives, members of the media and even politicians who were caught up in the intrigue.

Too Close

Too Close
How do you get rid of cat knots that are too close to the skin?

My kitty is a long haired himalayan. She doesn't like being combed and makes it impossible to do so. Her belly and arm pits are filled with huge mats that are very close to her skin and are pulling her fur off! I took her to a groomer and they didn't want to cut them off since it was so close to her skin. What do I do? I am too scared to cut them off myself.
If I take her to a vet and they sedate her, does anyone know how much this will cost?

DO NOT USE SCISSORS!!!!! You could cut the skin if you use scissors to cut knots that are close to the skin. You need to use a hair clipper...but you need to be very careful because clippers can cut the skin also or cause skin burns. Your best bet...take the cat to a groomer. Sometimes vets will due this... especially if he needs to be sedated first.

Too Close to the Falls Too Close to the Falls
List Price: $15.00
Sale Price: $5.22

Welcome to the childhood of Catherine McClure Gildiner. It is the mid-1950s in Lewiston, New York, a sleepy town near Niagara Falls. Divorce is unheard of, mothers wear high heels to the beauty salon, and television has only just arrived. At the tender age of four, Cathy accompanies Roy, the deliveryman at her father's pharmacy, on his routes. She shares some of their memorable deliveries-sleeping pills to Marilyn Monroe (in town filming Niagara), sedatives to Mad Bear, a violent Tuscarora chief, and fungus cream to Warty, the gentle operator of the town dump. As she reaches her teenage years, Cathy's irrepressible spirit spurs her from dangerous sled rides that take her "too close to the Falls" to tipsy dances with the town priest. "Anyone who appreciates a good story, well told, will find it in Too Close to the Falls." (St. Louis Post-Dispatch) "Gildiner beautifully portrays her outrageous youth through the innocent, yet sometimes frighteningly worldly eyes of a child." (The Quill & Quire)

Too Close to the Sun: The Audacious Life and Times of Denys Finch Hatton Too Close to the Sun: The Audacious Life and Times of Denys Finch Hatton
List Price: $18.00
Sale Price: $9.99

A champion of Africa, legendary for his good looks, his charm, and his prowess as a soldier, lover, and hunter, Denys Finch Hatton inspired Karen Blixen to write the unforgettable Out of Africa. Now esteemed British biographer Sara Wheeler tells the truth about this extraordinarily charismatic adventurer.Born to an old aristocratic family that had gambled away most of its fortune, Finch Hatton grew up in a world of effortless elegance and boundless power. In 1910, searching for something new, he arrived in British East Africa and fell in love–with a continent, with a landscape, with a way of life that was about to change forever. In Nairobi, Finch Hatton met Karen Blixen and embarked on one of the great love affairs of the twentieth century. Intellectual equals, Finch Hatton and Blixen were genuine pioneers in a land that was quickly being transformed by violence, greed, and bigotry. Ever restless, Finch Hatton wandered into a career as a big-game hunter and became an expert bush pilot. Mesmerized all his life by the allure of freedom and danger, Finch Hatton was, writes Wheeler, “the open road made flesh.”

Too Close to the Sun: Growing Up in the Shadow of my Grandparents, Franklin and Eleanor Too Close to the Sun: Growing Up in the Shadow of my Grandparents, Franklin and Eleanor
List Price: $29.95
Sale Price: $3.30

Curtis Roosevelt was three when he and his sister, Eleanor, arrived at the White House soon after their grandfather’s inauguration. The country’s “First Grandchildren,” a pint-sized double act, they were known to the media as “Sistie and Buzzie.” In this rich memoir, Roosevelt brings us into “the goldfish bowl,” as his family called it—that glare of public scrutiny to which all presidential households must submit. He recounts his misadventures as a hapless kid in an unforgivably formal setting and describes his role as a tiny planet circling the dual suns of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. Blending self-abasement, humor, awe and affection, Too Close to the Sun is an intimate portrait of two of the most influential and inspirational figures in modern American history—and a thoughtful exploration of the emotional impact of growing up in their irresistible aura.

Too Close for Comfort?: Questioning the Intimacy of Today's New Mother-Daughter Relationship Too Close for Comfort?: Questioning the Intimacy of Today's New Mother-Daughter Relationship
List Price: $15.00
Sale Price: $3.00

A fascinating look at how mothers and their adult daughters have formed a greater friendship than generations past-and whether or not there should be boundaries. No relationship is more complicated than the one between mothers and daughters- especially today, when a cultural shift can cause a longer period of time of overlapping interests before the traditional adult markers of marriage and family. As a result, these young women are developing deeper bonds with their own mothers, a relationship that sometimes mimics friendship. But are these close bonds healthy? Is it time to cut the umbilical cord? In this eye-opening book, Linda Perlman Gordon and Susan Morris Shaffer explore the modern mother-daughter relationship in all its glorious complexity. Combining a brilliant sociological analysis with fascinating stories of real- life women, Too Close for Comfort? provides a rich, provocative look at the ways mothers and daughters get it right, how they get it wrong-and how they can happily maintain being friends as well as mothers and daughters.

Too Close to Call: The Thirty-Six-Day Battle to Decide the 2000 Election Too Close to Call: The Thirty-Six-Day Battle to Decide the 2000 Election
List Price: $14.95
Sale Price: $4.25

From the best-selling author of A Vast Conspiracy and The Run of His Life comes Too Close to Call--the definitive story of the Bush-Gore presidential recount. A political and legal analyst of unparalleled journalistic skill, Jeffrey Toobin is the ideal writer to distill the events of the thirty-six anxiety-filled days that culminated in one of the most stunning Supreme Court decisions in history.Packed with news-making disclosures and written with the drive of a legal thriller, Too Close to Call takes us inside James Baker's private jet, through the locked gates to Al Gore's mansion, behind the covered-up windows of Katherine Harris's office, and even into the secret conference room of the United States Supreme Court. As the scene shifts from Washington to Austin and into the remote corners of the enduringly strange Sunshine State, Toobin's book will transform what you thought you knew about the most extraordinary political drama in American history. The Florida recount unfolded in a kaleidoscopic maze of bizarre concepts (chads, pregnant and otherwise), unfamiliar people in critically important positions (the Florida Supreme Court), and familiar people in surprising new places (the Miami relatives of Elián González, in a previously undisclosed role in this melodrama). With the rich characterization that is his trademark, Toobin portrays the prominent strategists who masterminded the campaigns--the Daleys and the Roves--and also the lesser-known but influential players who pulled the strings, as well as the judges and justices whose decisions determined the final outcome. Toobin gives both camps a treatment they have not yet received--remarkably evenhanded, nonpartisan, and entirely new.The post-election period posed a challenge to even the most zealous news junkie: how to keep up with what was happening and sort out the important from the trivial. Jeffrey Toobin has now done this--and then some. With clarity, insight, humor, and a deep understanding of the law, he deconstructs the events, the players, and the often Byzantine intricacies of our judicial system. A remarkable account of one of the most significant periods in our country's history, Too Close to Call is endlessly surprising, frequently poignant, and wholly addictive. From the Hardcover edition.

Too Close to the Sun: The Life and Times of Denys Finch Hatton Too Close to the Sun: The Life and Times of Denys Finch Hatton
Sale Price: $55.01

Denys Finch Hatton was an aristocrat of leonine nonchalance. He was 6 foot 3 inches tall, and once lifted a car out of a ditch unaided. After a dazzling career at Eton and Oxford, he sailed in 1910 for British East Africa. There, in this earthly paradise, he first had an affair with the pantherine aviatrix Beryl Markham, and then - famously - with Karen Blixen, a romance immortalised in her book "Out of Africa". 'No one who ever met him,' his "Times" obituary concluded, 'whether man or woman, old or young, white or black, failed to come under his spell.' "Too Close to the Sun" tells the true story of this now legendary love affair, and recreates in telling detail the life of one of the key figures in the mythic story of the British settlers in East Africa. Finch Hatton was a soldier in the East Africa Campaign, a white hunter, a farmer, a pilot, the epitome of the brave pioneer. To quote "The Times" again, 'He always left an impression of greatness ...and aroused interest as no one else could. It was not only his magnificent physique and striking features; there was the ready intuition and sympathy with every type of character, a wonderful sense of humour, determination; and yet behind it all, indefinite but ever present, a feeling of waste.'

How come Have way through the download it stops and nver comes back Up ?

I try to Download something like Yahoo messenger or Windows live. After it says it is Verifying It goes away and never comes back up. CAN ANYONE PLEASE HALP ME !!! I would be very happy. Thanks to all of you that have made my answers.

depends on the server and your connection, mostly. in some cases, if your downloading something that takes a long time and your connection is slow, the server might boot you for taking up too much time. it can also be because of firewall settings that wont allow 2 way communication that is nec for some downloads. live examines your system to find out what you have and then makes options available to you. also, you may have already downloaded it trying to save the program, but the program isn't designed to be saved, only run from the site, & then the site doesn't tell you. then again, it could be an old browser or a high jacking virus. best to try to get SUPPORT from the sites you're having trouble with.

In powerful parallel stories, mother and daughter give mesmerizing first-person accounts of the nightmare that shattered their family and the amazing journey they took to find their way back to each other. Claire Fontaine's relentless cross-country search for her missing child and ultimate decision to force her into treatment in Eastern Europe is a gripping tale of dead ends, painful revelations, and, at times, miracles. Mia Fontaine describes her refuge in the seedy underworld of felons and addicts as well as the jarring shock of the extreme, if loving, school that enabled her to overcome depression and self-loathing. Both women detail their remarkable process of self-examination and healing with humor and unsparing honesty. Come Back is an unforgettable true story of love and transformation that will resonate with mothers and daughters everywhere.

The summer Michael Smolij turns sixteen, his father disappears. One by one other men also vanish from the blue-collar neighborhood outside Detroit where their fathers before them had lived, raised families, and, in a more promising era, worked. One man props open the door to his shoe store and leaves a note. "I'm going to the moon," it reads. "I took the cash." The wives drink, brawl, and sleep around, gradually settling down to make new lives and shaking off the belief in an American dream that, like their husbands, has proven to be a thing of the past. Unable to leave the neighborhood their fathers abandoned, Michael and his friends stumble through their twenties until the restlessness of the fathers blooms in them, threatening to carry them away. Hailed as "a triumph" by O, The Oprah Magazine, this haunting, unforgettable debut novel is for anyone who has ever been left longing.

This time, Sally and her brother are stuck shoveling snow: "This was no time for play./ This was no time for fun./ This was no time for games./ There was work to be done." But--you guessed it--the laughing Hat Cat has other ideas, as he lets himself in to eat cake in their tub. He leaves behind "a big long pink cat ring," which he then handily cleans with "MOTHER'S WHITE DRESS!" The dress then loses its pink stain to the wall, then Dad's shoes, then the rug in the hall, until finally the Cat must call in some assistance: from inside his hat comes Little Cat A, then Littler Cats B, C, D, E, and so on, nested like dolls in ever tinier hats. With this pack of felines, Sally and her brother may get rid of those stains, but they'll likely never be rid of that rascally cat. As should be expected from the good doctor, The Cat in the Hat Comes Back provides an excellent reader (and alphabet primer) for those just learning, not to mention ample laughs for everyone else. (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes

But as the days pass, she too is drawn in--because the ladies (who are really in their twenties, and anthropologists) are stingy, stupid, and fun to watch. They don't understand the Isabo. Buck Up, Suck Up . . . and Come Back When You Foul Up: 12 Winning Secrets from the War Room Buck Up, Suck Up . . . and Come Back When You Foul Up: 12 Winning Secrets from the War Room
List Price: $12.95
Sale Price: $5.13

The political strategists who directed the Clinton campaign's War Room reveal the lessons and secrets from their hard-fought battles -- and how to use these highly effective strategies for success in business and everyday life. James Carville and Paul Begala have waged political war all across America and on three continents. They've won some of the most spectacular political victories of the twentieth century and lost a few campaigns too. Along the way, they've learned a few lessons. Some sound simple, like "Never Quit," some comic, like "Kiss Ass," and some are more complicated and nuanced, like "Strategy Ain't Tactics." But each lesson contains tried-and-true wisdom, illustrated with colorful stories from long political experience: • Find out how Carville's mother used a bass boat to "frame the debate" in selling encyclopedias. • Learn the War Room tricks for sharpening your message and delivering the perfect sound bite. • Discover what success secret Hillary Rodham Clinton and Tom DeLay share. • And much more. Whether you are a senior executive or a secretary, a political junkie or the president of the United States, the rules to live by can be found in Buck Up, Suck Up...and Come Back When You Foul Up.

Even if you fervently disagree with the party bias they tout proudly and often, you probably concur that Democratic political consultants Paul Begala and James Carville know what it takes to craft a winning strategy. In Buck Up, Suck Up... and Come Back When You Foul Up, the two lay out 12 of the rules they developed while separately and jointly masterminding some of the hottest political races in recent years. And with entertaining and enlightening behind-the-scenes anecdotes drawn from both effective and futile experiences along the campaign trail--most notably their work with Bill Clinton during his two presidential terms--Begala and Carville present a practical course that can be followed in business as well as politics. "If the audience you're trying to reach is smaller than the one hundred million voters we spend our time trying to reach," they write, "we believe these lessons are even more important because your target audience is even more sophisticated, even more interested, even more up-to-the-minute." At first glance, some rules appear blatantly obvious ("Don't Quit," "Turn Weakness into Strength") and some intentionally controversial ("Kiss Ass," "Know How to Recover When You Really Screw Up"). But, in their explanations, the relevancy and potential application of each consistently comes through. For example, in "Frame the Debate," they note how Ronald Reagan controlled the agenda in his 1980 challenge to Jimmy Carter through early attacks on the incumbent's most unpopular policies--showing precisely why "military strategists know that most battles are won ... by the side that determines where, when and how an engagement is fought." Likewise, in "Know How to Communicate," they bring five tips (tell a story, be brief, be emotional, be unique, be relevant) to life by explaining how their use aided campaigns for Hillary Clinton, Tony Blair, and others. The result, while perhaps too profane for some and definitely not Republican-friendly despite its grudging acknowledgment of a few masterful GOP performances, is nonetheless uniformly readable and genuinely practical. --Howard Rothman

Come Back, Como: Winning the Heart of a Reluctant Dog Come Back, Como: Winning the Heart of a Reluctant Dog
List Price: $23.99
Sale Price: $4.79

Steven Winn and his wife, Sally, held out for as long as they could. When the San Francisco couple finally gave in to their only child Phoebe's pleas for a dog, they adopted a scraggly terrier mutt from a local animal shelter. The new family pet, Como, turned out to hate men—especially the author—and proved to be a cunning escape artist. Traumatized, single-minded, and exceptionally clever, Como was bent on breaking Winn's sanity and self-respect, his bank account and his heart. Come Back, Como is the story of one man's hilarious and poignant quest to win the trust of a dog who wanted nothing to do with him. With humor and pathos, Winn describes the maddening but ultimately rewarding effects Como had on his family, the misadventures and ordeals and terrifying events he and his dog endured together, and the greatest lesson Como taught him: that loving a dog can make us more human.

I Really Want to Change... So, Help Me God I Really Want to Change... So, Help Me God
List Price: $14.99
Sale Price: $6.96

I REALLY want to change. Do you? Are you truly serious about allowing the power of God to transform your life? If you are, then prepare yourself for an incredible, life-changing experience. Change is difficult, but it’s made even harder without practical guidance on how to do it. You will find that guidance in I Really Want to Change ... So, Help Me God. James MacDonald is serious about the business of change according to God’s Word. While many tell us that we should change and be more like Christ, MacDonald actually teaches us how to do it. I Really Want to Change ... So, Help Me God is split into three sections as the model for approaching change: ¨ The Preparation for Change: choosing the right method and partnering with God to select the areas in need of change in your life. ¨ The Process of Change: exploring the biblical method of saying "no" to sinful patterns and "yes" to the things God desires for you. ¨ The Power to Change: explaining how to experience the power of God personally and continuously. This is a book about a different you. There are no warm fuzzies within these pages. Rather, MacDonald is a direct, to-the-point pastor with a heart for seeing lives completely transformed by the truth of the Gospel. If you’re serious about changing your life, I Really Want to Change ... So, Help Me God is just what you need.
