THE ALASKAN CHAPTER I CAPT AIN RIFLE, gray and old in the Alaskan Steamship service, had not lost the spirit of his youth along with his years. Romance was not dead in him, and the fire which is built up of clean adventure and the association of strong men and a mighty country had not died out of his veins. He could still see the picturesque, feel the thrill of the unusual, and-at times-warm memories crowded upon him so closely that yesterday seemed today, and Alaska was young again, thrilling the world with her wild call to those who had courage to come and fight for her treasures, and live-or die. Tonight, with the softly musical throb of his ship under his feet, and the yellow moon climbing up from behind the ramparts of the Alaskan mountains, something of loneliness seized upon him, and he said simply: "That is Alaska." The girl standing beside him at the rail did not turn, nor for a moment did she answer. He could see her profile clear-cut as a cameo in the About the Publisher Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings, such as: Philosophy, Classics, Science, Religion, History, Folklore and Mythology.Forgotten Books' Classic Reprint Series utilizes the latest technology to regenerate facsimiles of historically important writings. How Not to F*** Them Up
Sale Price: $20.73
|
|
|
Are you confused by parenting advice from experts who contradict each other? Concerned about the possible effects of being a working mother? Terrified of turning into your own parents? Parents today are overwhelmed with elaborate advice on how to raise babies. In "How Not to F*** Them Up", leading child psychologist Oliver James argues that it's not our children that must be trained...it's us. Meticulously researched, inspiring and yet provocative, "How Not to F*** Them Up" raises important questions about the way in which we bring up our children: Do we, as a society, provide enough support for parents?; How has the role of the father changed in recent years?; and Can a working mum ever reconcile her career with her family life? Drawing on extensive interviews, James identifies three basic types of mum: the Hugger, the Organiser, and the Fleximum. Outlining the benefits and pitfalls of each, James offers simple strategies to reconcile parents' personal ambition and desire for a career with the needs of the family and maintaining a work/life balance. By challenging our ingrained and often flawed beliefs, James shows us how our own childhood experiences can impact on our perception of 'the family', and how ultimately we can provide the happy and stable environment that all babies and toddlers need, regardless of our own upbringing.

Free-Range Kids, How to Raise Safe, Self-Reliant Children (Without Going Nuts with Worry)
List Price: $14.95
Sale Price: $7.89
|

FREE RANGE KIDS has become a national movement, sparked by the incredible response to Lenore Skenazy?s piece about allowing her 9-year-old ride the subway alone in NYC. Parent groups argued about it, bloggers, blogged, spouses became uncivil with each other, and the media jumped all over it. A lot of parents today, Skenazy says, see no difference between letting their kids walk to school and letting them walk through a firing range. Any risk is seen as too much risk. But if you try to prevent every possible danger or difficult in your child?s everyday life, that child never gets a chance to grow up. We parents have to realize that the greatest risk of all just might be trying to raise a child who never encounters choice or independence.

How should I react defensively to a goose?
I take a walk every morning, and this includes walking through a park Local. There are several families of ducks and geese there. There is a goose, which I think is extra protection for his family. When they are slightly near the sidewalk, he charges after me to stay away. I usually do not make eye contact and keep walking (a little faster as usual!). Are there ways that I could take to deter geese? Should I yell at him? Stomp him? I appreciate any suggestions!
The few species can be very defensive, and they are not easily placated. They are indeed used as animal care facilities in the nuclear Fort Knox and other high security compounds because, unlike dogs, they can not be appeased, bribed, or calmed with body language. The best way to avoid triggering a defensive action to avoid coming in range of the region or the family that defends. It is the only territory where it has, so it is naturally a tad defensive, while you can avoid conflict by making the turn. You can try challenge him, standing, walking directly toward him. The goose down in May, and away from you (it will always whistle and honk, probably stronger than the past), or it may be determined enough to actually attack. Although they do not watch the geese can be very dangerous. They have strong wings with powerful muscles behind them, and can provide some very painful blows with their bills. You must decide if it is bullying of the goose, and risk may be a struggle to challenge its territory. I recommend just going around.

Colorful pictures and simple rhyming texts help children guess what's peeking through the die-cut windows in these two fun board books. The anticipation of what's hiding on the next page and the bright, engaging illustrations will keep youngsters guessing and giggling all the way to the suprise endings.
Nina Laden's illustrations in this simple, rhyming board book are truly magical. The format is straightforward: on alternating two-page spreads, the words "Peek a" are repeated, opposite an illustrated page with a die-cut hole, behind which lurks a cow ("MOO!"), a green ghost ("BOO!"), and a mirror (you guessed it, "YOU!"). The youngest readers will delight in trying to guess who--or what--is peeking through the window, and can easily grip the baby-fist-size holes to turn the pages for the answers. The picture of the "ZOO!" is fabulous. Through the hole, all that can be seen is a wild pattern of colors, stripes, and spots. Turn the page, and find a wild kingdom of animals, one in front of the other: peacock, zebra, penguin, cheetah, elephant, and more. Ready for more peekaboo fun? Try Nina Laden's Ready, Set, Go! . Yes, but it is buried deep in the epilogue. In the film, Briony is interviewed as a famous writer, late in his career / life. In the book, Briony is feted at a birthday party for the family to his former Home, which has since been converted into bed-and-breakfast. Ironically, the Misbegotten room, she tried to put this issue at the beginning of the book is finally set by his great-nieces and nephews in his party. His brother, attending to a wheelchair, as he is very old and weak. She is looking back on her life and she reveals what happened to Robbie and Cee - But it is mentioned in passing that in a long explanation of long-term. It's really nothing more than a sentence or two. Sorta leaves the reader shocked and saddened that there was no "resolution", but in a sense, this was the whole point - for some things, there is no reconciliation or resolution. The characters do not have one - Why drive?

Is it not ironic that those who crow about "white pride" are actually a stain on western society?
They claim they are fighting to preserve the honor of Western traditions, but they represent the worst that Western society has to offer. Kind of funny, huh?
I agree. But this does not mean that people should not be proud of their heritage or ethnicity ... They should not be racist about him or belittle other cultures / races.

The history of the Western church in the Middle Ages is the history of the most elaborate and thoroughly integrated system of religious thought and practice the world has ever known. It is also the history of European society during eight hundred years of sometimes rapid change. This authoritative history shows how the concept of an organized human society, both religious and secular, as an expression of a divinely ordered universe, was central to medieval thought. Professor R. W. Southern's book covers the period from the eighth to the sixteenth century, highlighting the main features of each medieval age and studying the Papacy, the relations between Rome and her rival Constantinople, the bishops and archbishops and the various religious orders in detail, providing a superb study of the period.

Who thinks Micheal Jackson was a good man?
I always felt he was innocent...and I am still positive he is. I get angered when I think about how the mass media destroyed his dignity. He really was a good man, who had a HUGE heart. I truely believe this. do you agree?
I do. I believe he was a loving and caring man that had a real big heart. It's sad to see that many people mis-judged him and still continue to.
RIP Michael Jackson <3

All Things for Good: The Steadfast Fidelity of Stonewall Jackson (Leaders in Action Series)
List Price: $16.95
Sale Price: $9.95
|
|
|
Dubbed "Stonewall" following the battle of First Manassas in July 1861, Thomas Jackson has long been revered as a brilliant military leader and tactician and as one of the most adroit Confederate commanders. The man himself is a study in contrasts: justifiably feared by his enemies and completely beloved by his men. J. Steven Wilkins examines the life and character of Jackson. His research reveals a man humble and sincere in his Christian faith, which stands in stark contrast with the general’s reputation as a ferocious warrior. Shortly after his graduation from West Point in 1846, Jackson served in the Mexican War in 1848, where he became one of the most decorated heroes of the conflict and received promotion to the brevetted rank of major. He left the army in 1851 to accept a teaching position at the Virginia Military Institute, resigning his commission in the army a year later. In 1859 he led a contingent of cadets to maintain order during the trial and ensuing execution of John Brown. When Jackson departed VMI in 1861 to join the Confederate army, he was immediately commissioned a colonel and within months was promoted to the rank of brigadier general. Mortally wounded by friendly fire in May 1863, he "more than anyone else, personified the compelling and the virtuous in what the subsequent generation would label ‘The Lost Cause’"—James I. Robertson Jr.

"When pressed by the question, 'Well, what is so great about Jackson?' we're stuck for superlatives. We don't have the South's tallest buildings or the largest population or the most money. Yet, there are hundreds, maybe thousands, of things about this town that we like, or we wouldn't bother to live here." So says our storyteller and broadcaster Walt Grayson in Jackson: The Good Life as he sets out to name a few of the many elements that make his adopted hometown such a fascinating place. It's a crossroads city, where cultures merge and creative forces are born. It's also the state capital, with all the power and prestige that comes with being the seat of Mississippi's government. Put these forces together, writes Grayson, and you end up with a city that is rich and diverse-- "a big old country town" that is quickly outgrowing its Deep South roots to become one of the New South's most desirable locales. Aided by hundreds of outstanding images collected by photography editor Gib Ford. Grayson creates a mosaic of tales and images that help define what makes Jackson such a special place to call home. "Only when you put all of the parts together does a total picture emerge." Grayson concludes, "It's like experiencing a kaleidoscope: It's the overall pattern formed from all of the many changing colors that you're really seeing." Take a closer look, and you too can experience the good life that Grayson and his fellow Jacksonians already know so well.

A world-renowned authority on religion and ethics in America, Martin Marty gives a judicious account of how our body politic has been torn between the imperative of one one nation undivided and the separate urgings of distinct identitiesracial, ethnic, religious, gendered, ideological, economicclaiming grievances. Issuing an urgent call for repair, Marty envisions steps we might take to cary America past this new turbulence.
With characteristic insight, wit, and eloquence, Martin Marty challenges us to rethink the cultural assumptions that form the very basis of American democracy Eschewing such hackneyed language as "culture wars" and "identity politics. " The One and the Many shows that national unity in a time of heightened diversity can only be achieved if serious attention is paid to narratives and rituals from which our nation has always drawn strength.
