THE ALASKAN CHAPTER I CAPT AIN RIFLE, gray and old in the Alaskan Steamship service, had not lost the spirit of his youth along with his years. Romance was not dead in him, and the fire which is built up of clean adventure and the association of strong men and a mighty country had not died out of his veins. He could still see the picturesque, feel the thrill of the unusual, and-at times-warm memories crowded upon him so closely that yesterday seemed today, and Alaska was young again, thrilling the world with her wild call to those who had courage to come and fight for her treasures, and live-or die. Tonight, with the softly musical throb of his ship under his feet, and the yellow moon climbing up from behind the ramparts of the Alaskan mountains, something of loneliness seized upon him, and he said simply: "That is Alaska." The girl standing beside him at the rail did not turn, nor for a moment did she answer. He could see her profile clear-cut as a cameo in the About the Publisher Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings, such as: Philosophy, Classics, Science, Religion, History, Folklore and Mythology.Forgotten Books' Classic Reprint Series utilizes the latest technology to regenerate facsimiles of historically important writings. How Not to F*** Them Up
Sale Price: $20.73
|
|
|
Are you confused by parenting advice from experts who contradict each other? Concerned about the possible effects of being a working mother? Terrified of turning into your own parents? Parents today are overwhelmed with elaborate advice on how to raise babies. In "How Not to F*** Them Up", leading child psychologist Oliver James argues that it's not our children that must be trained...it's us. Meticulously researched, inspiring and yet provocative, "How Not to F*** Them Up" raises important questions about the way in which we bring up our children: Do we, as a society, provide enough support for parents?; How has the role of the father changed in recent years?; and Can a working mum ever reconcile her career with her family life? Drawing on extensive interviews, James identifies three basic types of mum: the Hugger, the Organiser, and the Fleximum. Outlining the benefits and pitfalls of each, James offers simple strategies to reconcile parents' personal ambition and desire for a career with the needs of the family and maintaining a work/life balance. By challenging our ingrained and often flawed beliefs, James shows us how our own childhood experiences can impact on our perception of 'the family', and how ultimately we can provide the happy and stable environment that all babies and toddlers need, regardless of our own upbringing.

The fan magazine has often been viewed simply as a publicity tool, a fluffy exercise in self-promotion by the film industry. But as an arbiter of good and bad taste, as a source of knowledge, and as a gateway to the fabled land of Hollywood and its stars, the American fan magazine represents a fascinating and indispensable chapter in journalism and popular culture.Anthony Slide's Inside the Hollywood Fan Magazine provides the definitive history of this artifact. It charts the development of the fan magazine from the golden years when Motion Picture Story Magazine and Photoplay first appeared in 1911 to its decline into provocative headlines and titillation in the 1960s and afterward. Slide discusses how the fan magazines dealt with gossip and innuendo, and how they handled nationwide issues such as Hollywood scandals of the 1920s, World War II, the blacklist, and the death of President Kennedy. Fan magazines thrived in the twentieth century, and they presented the history of an industry in a unique, sometimes accurate, and always entertaining style. This major cultural history includes a new interview with 1970s media personality Rona Barrett, as well as original commentary from a dozen editors and writers. Also included is a chapter on contributions to the fan magazines from well-known writers such as Theodore Dreiser and e. e. cummings. The book is enhanced by an appendix documenting some 268 American fan magazines and includes detailed publication histories.

How would you define cultural diversity of the United States?
I work on creating a cultural metaphor for the United States as a school project and was wondering how foriegners and Native-united-states-citizens view the U.S. as a cultural identity in the world. Does anyone have an idea? I live in California, and I actually have a hard-description - Culture U.S. even if I understand it there and I see every day! What do you all think?
Amazing! In my own school which includes 2,500 students, is very mestiza to give it the majority are white, but probably 15% of children with my school speak two languages.

Community colleges are positioned to play a critical role in the process of upward mobility in American society. Yet despite the "open door" accessibility of these institutions, the question remains as to whether or not community colleges enhance the social mobility of working class and minority students. The contradictory and often paradoxical nature of research on community colleges suggests that making generalizations about the sector as a whole is perhaps misguided. This book takes an important step toward developing a more nuanced understanding of the rich and varied cultures inherent in community colleges. The contributors approach this task by examining community colleges as "cultural texts," using critical qualitative frameworks to address the question of whether, and how, community colleges confront the challenges of diversity and provide real opportunities for upward mobility

This science methods textbook is designed to provide middle and high school science teachers with the skills they need to help students become scientifically and technologically literate. To be successful, beginning teachers must master the basic functions of teaching. They are: Understanding the purpose of science teaching Planning science lessons that are engaging and lead to meaningful learning Managing the science learning environment in ways that emphasize student responsibility Assessing students science learning throughout the instructional process Teaching in a way that is both active and personally rewarding. Once these basic skills have been mastered, then pre-service teachers are ready to tackle the other important topics relevant to science teaching and learning. In order to meet this goal, the authors immediately engage their readers with six introductory chapters on these basic skills. The remaining chapters focus on the foundational areas of science education and strategies for science teaching. Many vignettes and examples of classroom practices are included to reinforce the chapter content. The appendices provide Puzzling Situations, science demonstrations, science laboratory activities, and a scoring key for the science inventory found in Chapter One. New To This Edition: NEW: Opens each of the six introductory chapters with revised vignettes that serve as advanced organizers of the chapter–Focuses on the basic functions of science teaching-purpose: planning, assessing, teaching, and managing. NEW! Correlates the chapter content with the NSTA/NCATE 2003 Professional Standards for Science Teacher Preparation–Facilitates the preparation of the NCATE review process at many universities. NEW! Uses backwards design strategies (Wiggins & McTighe, 2005) to guide the discussion of instructional planning in Chapter Three–Emphasizes unit planning (rather than lesson planning) and the state science standards. Guided by backward design strategies, the book stresses the use of state and locally developed curriculum frameworks and science literacy (strand) maps presented online by the National Science Digital Library. NEW! Introduces a Beginning Science Teacher’s Checklist for evaluating lesson assessment practices (Chapter 4)–These three sections focus on assessment practices that should be addressed before, during, and after a lesson. NEW! Addresses Differentiated Instruction in Chapter 8 Diverse Adolescent Learners and Differentiated Instruction–Suggests ways teachers can address the diverse learning needs of today’s students. NEW! Emphasizes the use of Technological Tools of Science Learning such as computer data collection probe-ware and graphing calculators in Chapter 15–Discusses their use in student investigations. After eight books, many of them bestsellers, A Game Plan for Life is the one closest to John Wooden’s heart: a moving and inspirational guide to the power of mentorship. The first half focuses on the people who helped foster the values that carried Wooden through an incredibly successful and famously principled career, including his college coach, his wife, Abraham Lincoln, and Mother Teresa. The second half is built around interviews with some of the many people he mentored over the years, including Kareem Abdul- Jabbar, Bill Walton, fellow coaches, family members, and even a middle school coach in Canada. Their testimony takes readers inside the lessons Wooden taught to generations of players, bringing out the very best in them not just as athletes but as human beings. In all, it’s an inspiring primer on how to achieve success without sacrificing principles, and on how to build one of the most productive and rewarding relationships available to any athlete, businessperson, teacher, or parent: that of mentor and protégé.
