Sale Price: $40.95

|
Here is the first comprehensive survey of modern craft in the United States. Makers follows the development of studio craft--objects in fiber, clay, glass, wood, and metal--from its roots in nineteenth-century reform movements to the rich diversity of expression at the end of the twentieth century. &9;More than four hundred illustrations complement this chronological exploration of the American craft tradition. Keeping as their main focus the objects and the makers, Janet Koplos and Bruce Metcalf offer a detailed analysis of seminal works and discussions of education, institutional support, and the philosophical underpinnings of craft. In a vivid and accessible narrative, they highlight the value of physical skill, examine craft as a force for moral reform, and consider the role of craft as an aesthetic alternative. Exploring craft's relationship to fine arts and design, Koplos and Metcalf foster a critical understanding of the field and help explain craft's place in contemporary culture. Makers will be an indispensable volume for craftspeople, curators, collectors, critics, historians, students, and anyone who is interested in American craft. &9; &9;Exploring craft's relationship to fine arts and design, Koplos and Metcalf foster a critical understanding of the field and help explain craft's place in contemporary culture. Inside the Hollywood Fan Magazine: A History of Star Makers, Fabricators, and Gossip Mongers
List Price: $40.00
Sale Price: $32.00
|
|
|
The fan magazine has often been viewed simply as a publicity tool, a fluffy exercise in self-promotion by the film industry. But as an arbiter of good and bad taste, as a source of knowledge, and as a gateway to the fabled land of Hollywood and its stars, the American fan magazine represents a fascinating and indispensable chapter in journalism and popular culture.Anthony Slide's Inside the Hollywood Fan Magazine provides the definitive history of this artifact. It charts the development of the fan magazine from the golden years when Motion Picture Story Magazine and Photoplay first appeared in 1911 to its decline into provocative headlines and titillation in the 1960s and afterward. Slide discusses how the fan magazines dealt with gossip and innuendo, and how they handled nationwide issues such as Hollywood scandals of the 1920s, World War II, the blacklist, and the death of President Kennedy. Fan magazines thrived in the twentieth century, and they presented the history of an industry in a unique, sometimes accurate, and always entertaining style. This major cultural history includes a new interview with 1970s media personality Rona Barrett, as well as original commentary from a dozen editors and writers. Also included is a chapter on contributions to the fan magazines from well-known writers such as Theodore Dreiser and e. e. cummings. The book is enhanced by an appendix documenting some 268 American fan magazines and includes detailed publication histories.

What are the learning activities should I do with my daughter during the day?
My daughter and I stay home during the day and I fear that because she does not care she learns not as it should be. She is 4 months now and I need Learn what is a good routine to help him learn more and what are the things I do with it?
At this age, it should be home with you, so do not worry if it is to learn! It needs to be kept by you and you loved, and she needs to hear your voice very much. Talk to her all the time! Read to her and sing for her. Put some music on and hold it carefully in your arms when you dance with her. Put a child safe mirror where she can easily see in his pen game, or on the floor against the wall so she can see when you lay him on the floor for some time on its belly. At 4 months, one of the first things she should be learning is the security and love, because if it has them, it will always be a learner more successfully than the child who is deprived of these feelings, so do not be worried about spoiling her right now. Cuddle her, hold her, tell her you love her and enjoy these special moments of his life! They spend far too quickly.

Written by acclaimed school reform advocate Phillip C. Schlechty, Leading for Learning offers educators the framework, tools, and processes they need to transform their schools from bureaucracies into dynamic learning organizations. Schlechty explains how to move beyond some of the deeply ingrained and negative conceptions of schooling that guide so much of their practice. He shows educators how they can take advantage of new learning technologies by increasing their organization's capacity to support continuous innovation. "Clearly not for the fainthearted, Schlechty's engrossing appraisal of American education calls for a bold, truly fundamental transformation of how we run our public schools. Some books are thought-provoking; this one is action-provoking." —W. James Popham, professor emeritus, UCLA "Dr. Schlechty has once again written an insightful book that educational leaders can use as a road map in transforming our schools into learning organizations designed to serve twenty-first century students." —Dr. Randy Bridges, superintendent, Alamance-Burlington School System, NC "Because education is ultimately a community responsibility, Schlechty's proposal to shift school systems from bureaucracies to learning organizations can open doors to citizens who are frustrated by the bureaucracy in their efforts to reclaim their role in education. This book is as much for them as it is for professional educators." —David Mathews, president, Kettering Foundation "Anyone in a school leadership position—from the board room to the classroom—should read this engaging and thought-provoking book. It's a must?-read for all immersed in or contemplating the transformation of public education." — Claudia Mansfield Sutton, chief communications and marketing officer, American Association of School Administrators

For almost a century, educational theory and practice have been influenced by the view of behavioural psychologists that learning is synonymous with behavior change. In this book, the authors argue for the practical importance of an alternate view, that learning is synonymous with a change in the meaning of experience. They develop their theory of the conceptual nature of knowledge and describe classroom-tested strategies for helping students to construct new and more powerful meanings and to integrate thinking, feeling, and acting. In their research, they have found consistently that standard educational practices that do not lead learners to grasp the meaning of tasks usually fail to give them confidence in their abilities. It is necessary to understand why and how new information is related to what one already knows. All those concerned with the improvement of education will find something of interest in Learning How to Learn.

Wilco: Learning How to Die

By now the story has become music-industry lore--part cautionary tale, part barometer of the times. When alt-country-cum-experimental rock indie heroes Wilco turned in their 4th album (Yankee Hotel Foxtrot) to its label, Reprise, a division of Warner, fans looked forward to the release of another challenging, genre-bending departure from their previous work. The band hoped to build on their previous, modest sales and critical acclaim but was instead asked to compromise its artistic integrity for what the Reprise record execs promised would be "radio-friendly" success -- and higher record sales. When Wilco wouldn't give, they found themselves without a label. The ultimate irony? Nonesuch, another division of Warner, bought the record for three times the money and the album debuted at 13 on the Billboard charts, posting its strongest sales to date. Already the subject of I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, a music documentary released to glowing reviews at the L.A. Film Festival, Wilco is the band that critics have called both "the greatest band you've never heard" and "the greatest band of its generation." But its reputation is growing. Since the band's humble inception in southern Illinois over ten years ago, it has built a national following of underground followers—more reliant on word-of-mouth recommendations, the indie club scene, and free internet downloads. But their story is not just one of the David-and-Goliath struggle against corporate influence on musicians, it is also a compelling, intimate look at making music and the difficult but wonderful collaborative process of being in a band.

How-to Use Problem-Based Learning in the Classroom
List Price: $12.95
Sale Price: $7.00
|
|
|
Engaging and motivating students--especially the least motivated learners--is a daily challenge. But with the process of problem-based learning (PBL), any teacher can create an exciting, active classroom where students themselves eagerly build problem-solving skills while learning the content necessary to apply them. With problem-based learning, students' work begins with an ill-defined problem. Key to this problem is how it explicitly links something important in students' daily lives to the classroom. This motivational feature is vital as students define the what, where, and how of resolving the problem situation. Problem-based learning may sound potentially chaotic and haphazard, but it rests on the firm foundation of a teacher's work behind the scenes. The teacher develops a problem long before students see it, specifically choosing the skills and content the problem will emphasize and matching those to curriculum and standards. Though a PBL problem will have no "right" answer, the teacher structures the experience so that specific learning takes place as students generate the problem-solving steps, research issues, and produce a final product. The teacher guides without leading, assists without directing. Robert Delisle details the PBL process, the teacher's role in problem-based learning, and important background information about the history of PBL. The book describes a variety of PBL lessons, including problems, a chart for organizing student research, and information about assessment.

How do i prevent dead frogs from appearing in my house??
Today was the second time I found dead frogs in my house. i have no pets and I do not live in the country side! Where do they come from and how can i stop this??? It's really gross to be cleaning under something and come across these dead frogs! Please help!
Dead frogs?! I'm sure they were alive when they entered your home. Are they frogs or toads? Toads don't always live in the water, they live in moist, cool habitats. They hop around looking for insects and perhaps they entered your home in pursuit of some tasty crickets, flies or other insects. Wet weather brings them out more.
Cover any holes around your apartment so that they can't come in.
They then got caught in your home, died and dehydrated.

The House of the Dead
List Price: $7.95
Sale Price: $7.41

|
|
Published in 1862 after Dostoyevsky's imprisonment in a Siberian labor camp, "The House of the Dead" is a collection of memoirs, related by themes, that portrays the horrific life of convicts. The author drew on his own experiences in prison to depict the squalor, destitution, and severity of a Siberian camp with remorseless detail. Dostoyevsky reveals the characters of many of the other convicts, which includes the depravity many have come to expect through their mental and physical suffering. The protagonist is Aleksandr Petrovich, a gentleman who additionally struggles with the malice of the largely peasant-populated prison. He gradually comes to accept his situation, experiencing a spiritual re-awakening in the unremitting strife of penal servitude. Though told with uncharacteristic detachment, "The House of the Dead" is a work of humanity, not without sympathy or admiration of those in Siberia, that proclaims the tragedy of those institutions, both for the inhabitants and for the country of Russia, in one of Dostoyevsky's masterpieces.

Memoirs from the House of the Dead (Oxford World's Classics)
List Price: $10.95
Sale Price: $6.00

|
|
In this almost documentary account of his own experiences of penal servitude in Serbia, Dostoevsky describes the physical and mental suffering of the convicts, the squalor and the degradation, in relentless detail. The inticate procedure whereby the men strip for the bath without removing their ten-pound leg-fetters is an extraordinary tour de force, compared by Turgenev to passages from Dante's Inferno. Terror and resignation - the rampages of a pyschopath, the brief serence interlude of Christmas Day - are evoked by Dostoevsky, writing several years after his release, with a strikingly uncharacteristic detachment. For this reason, House of the Dead is certainly the least Dostoevskian of his works, yet, paradoxically, it ranks among his great masterpieces.

A teenage girl’s coming-of-age in the Midwest in the 1940s about which Tillie Olsen wrote, “Wondrous, a true American classic . . . the timeless magic which is art.”
The Dead of the House was the first and only novel to be published by the late Hannah Green. Originally issued in 1972, it won lavish praise from critics and readers alike. Yet the novel, which took the author almost 20 years to write, went out of print for almost another two decades, until it was reissued in 1996. Today its virtues are no less evident. Green's lyricism transforms the fairly mundane fabric of her childhood--spent in Ohio and on the Lake Michigan shore--into exquisite, elaborately-worked prose.

What is the size of a black light would I need a glow in the dark in a dance hall?
One of my friends and I are a duet for a dance recital. We want to make a glow in the dark dance with just our hands and feet burning, but we need a black light. What is the size of black light do we need for our glow in the dark paint to appear?
Interesting idea. I do not think needs to be huge, especially if you post near you dance. You can use 3 small lights instead of a real bid. She provide more uniform illumination. The one I designed for a lounge, it is about 1.5 m long, but I can not remember off hand the number watts of power is needed, which is much more important. I think 3 of these will do. Sorry, I can not go check this kind that I do, I did not here. Depends a lot on the subject gloves and socks, or the quality of the paint flourecsent. With the fabric, choose really white, or a really bright yellow. I think this will be the brightest.

What is life, but the space made in random order, like words in a book to a story?
What life, but the space made in random order, like words in a book to a story? Is there another author of randomness and chance? If yes, what design to join forces to give this life be?
With a string of random events, the Earth has been able to support life. Molecules become more complex and it was life. I am so grateful for the Earth and the Sun and Mother Nature and the Universe randomly to enable man to live, not on purpose, but inadvertently. The Earth is beautiful. The universe is filled with harmony. Stars die and form other stars. The universe is one of those books that give you options on each page of what to do, but one billion pages. (Go to page three, if you want to turn left, go to page 12 if you want to turn right). The book is unpredictable. Results virtually unlimited. And somehow, animals and plants and life evolved on this planet. Random, but beautifully.
